To find out if a device has been correctly configured for a TCP/IP network, use the ping command.
Note: If you are trying to determine if an IP address is not in use to be assigned to the printer, then ping the intended IP address. If you receive a "Request timed out" message (unsuccessful - see image below), then you can go ahead and assign that particular IP address to the printer. If you receive a "Reply from" the IP address you pinged (Successful - see image below), then that means that particular IP address is already in use by another device on the network and therefore you must choose a different IP address (see below).
Windows:
Follow these steps to ping the MFP with the IP address of 192.168.0.201 from a Windows computer. If you do not know the IP address of your Sharp, click here: How to obtain the IP address of your Sharp
1. Click Start, and then Run… (can also select Search in Windows Vista and Windows 7).
2. Type cmd in the dialog box and press Enter
3. Type ping 192.168.0.201 and press Enter
Four replies should be returned. If the ping receives no replies:
1. Check the IP configuration of the computer and the MFP – they must be on the same network.
2. Check or replace the network cable.
MAC:
1. Click on Finder in the dock.
2. Click on Macintosh HD in the window.
3. Click on Applications.
4. Click on Utilities.
5. Double-click on Network Utility
6. In the Network Utility window, click on the Ping tab.
7. In the field under "Please enter the network address to ping," enter the IP address to ping.
8. Click the Ping button.
